Overview
The Boat Company is seeking a captain for one of its two motor vessels, the M/V Liseron (USCG licensed Master 100-ton).
The Captain is in charge of the ship. It is the captain’s duty to manage the vessel in such a manner as to ensure the safety and wellbeing of guests and crew, and to conduct ship’s affairs in accordance with established The Boat Company (TBC) policies and direction from the Vice President of Operations. The company relies on the Captain to set a high standard of personal and professional conduct, and to maintain shipboard morale and respect for the company’s purpose and mission.
Primary Responsibilities
Become fully familiar with the handling characteristics of the vessel (maneuvering, docking, anchoring, etc.) as well as the operation of critical systems (electronic navigation aids, steering, de-watering, safety apparatus, etc.)
Maintain required logbooks according to established practice and in established formats.
Update and display all necessary licenses as required by TBC, the United States Coast Guard and other state and federal regulatory agencies.
Oversee all crew members and ensure that each understands and performs his/her assigned duties adequately. Captain must personally provide training and orientation to new crew members, or may assign this task to an appropriately experienced crew member. In particular, Captain must offer hands-on training to 1st Mate to help ensure command-ready competence.
Monitor work schedules of all crew members and coordinate with First Mate and department heads to adjust workloads so that everyone receives adequate and more-or-less comparable off-duty and rest time.
Instruct all participants in navigational watches on standing orders, establish watch schedules, post station bills.
Conduct emergency drills. Written drill reports will be logged.
Timely and proper filing of all state and federal reports such as (but not limited to) Notices of Arrival, Alaska Department of Fish and Game sportfishing logbooks, National Forest usage reports, etc.
Safekeeping of all bear-protection. Captain must ensure that all crew members with guide duties take part in periodic pepper-spray practice sessions to maintain competency levels.
Oversee all guest activities. A radio watch will be maintained during all off-vessel excursions.
Track all purchases, keep accurate accounts and maintain expenses within budget amounts. Captain must forward receipts for expenses on a weekly basis to Operations Manager along with a financial accounting report detailing checking and petty cash activity.
Review pre-season and post-season inventory reports from department heads (Mate, Steward, Chef and Engineer) to ensure completeness and accuracy.
Minimum Requirements
US Citizen, US National or Green Card holder.
Five years of experience working aboard or operating small boats, including at least two years as captain or mate aboard vessels carrying multiple crew members.
STCW-95 basic safety training.
TWIC card.
USCG license with a minimum rating of Master 100-ton for the M/V LISERON upon inland waters.
Must pass pre-employment drug screen, reference checks and background check.
Must be capable of demonstrating proficiency in the safe and effective handling and discharging of pepper spray, which is required equipment on all shore excursions where there may be risk of encounters with aggressive bears.
Must have sufficiently acute hearing, eyesight and depth perception to meet the demands of at-sea service. Must be capable of using escape hatches and boarding /disembarking survival craft unassisted.
Must be available for entire season of operation from early April thru mid-September, commencing and completing the term of employment in the Puget Sound area of Washington State.
Desired Skills/Abilities
Outgoing and friendly demeanor, able to engage and communicate easily with passengers and crew.
Familiarity with Alaska waters, weather conditions, history and current events.
Proficient in Windows, Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Word, Nobeltec TimeZero Navigation software; plus, general writing abilities.
